Valdez - July 5, 2014

We didn't do a lot again today.  Guess we are all worn out.  Gary and I went to a museum which has a lot of information about the 1964 earthquake and the devastation to this area.  It registered 9.2 on the rector scale, the strongest one ever recorded in North America.  The old town of Valdez was virtually destroyed and 30 some people were killed.  The government then  moved the town 4 miles from the original site to the location it is now.  To this day no one can own land in that area.
There was also a lot of information about the gold rush and the disappointment of the miners when they landed at the Valdez area and discovered there was nothing here.  They then had to cross the passes to reach the gold mining area.  There are "holes" all along the coast line where they dug to try to find gold.
The other information that we read about was the Alaskan pipeline that was started in 1974 and finished in 1977.  I didn't absorb a lot of the detailed figures but found it interesting all the same.
Jeff and Marcella fixed seafood chowder for this evening.  It was delicious!  After we ate, I got out the guitar for only the second time this whole trip.  Glen, Marcella, and I played and sang while the other three listened.  They might have felt like they were a captive audience

Containers to store the oil - have forgotten how many thousand barrels of oil they hold
Tanker ready to load.  It will hold 2 of the above containers
