The wifi isn't very strong here at Triple G Campground in Fort Nelson so I hope this will publish. The distance today was a little over 300 miles. There was a mixture of lovely scenery and flat terrain. The road was pretty good. There were a few stretches that were rough but all paved.
Our first stop was at Dawson Creek which is the beginning of the Alaska Highway (mile 0). It was mainly built in the earlier 40s, mostly for the military during the war. The construction of it is pretty amazing. Some stretches have been straightened to make the journey 60 miles or more shorter. One sign stated that one wonders what the engineers were thinking when they planned it and if they were drunken engineers. It was also speculated that it may have been so curvy to prevent the Japanese from being able to bomb it and block the entire route. There were several sites that were military checkpoints during the war.
Our final destination for the day was Fort Nelson. It is located at the Muskwa (which means bear) River which frequently floods the low country around Fort Nelson and is the lowest point on the Alaska Highway.
We did see 3 bears but they were much too elusive for me to get a picture from the moving vehicle.
This trip certainly has its challenges. Glen/Gayla and their motor home are still in Grand Prairie. Just when one thing is fixed another is found. They rest of us are moseying on north. They are still hoping to get it repaired and moving on soon. We may not meet them again until Anchorage.
At Pink Mountain which was one of the few gas stops on our route, we needed fuel. Gary didn't quite make the sharp turn to the pumps and we have slight damage to the left side of the 5th wheel. How dare them put concrete bunkers by the pumps. lol
