Portage - June 18, 2014

We were having too much fun last night to post on the blog. lol  I will try to get it done this morning.  If it wasn't for Sister/Brother-in-law's Version service, I wouldn't have any.  Good old AT&T sure isn't enough signal.  After a day of touring, several of us gathered around the semi-enclosed campfire area for a jam session.  It was a good time but later that Gary could hardly stand.

The Portage glacier was our first stop today.  We think the glacier has receded several feet since we were here in 2010.  However, the information given on the boat was that there are over 100,000 glaciers in Alaska and about 100 of them are actually getting larger.  The views of the mountains, waterfalls, and glaciers was as spectacular as we  remembered them.

We then drove to Girdwood, about 11 miles away.  There was some information about an old mine, Crow Creek Mine, so we went to visit it.  Let me describe it as a definite tourist trap.  There must have been at least 25 tour buses come and go when we were there.  Needless to say, we did not pay $20 to pan for gold.  They guaranteed that you would find gold.  Turned out they put a few flecks in a zip lock bag they gave you to put into your pan before you shoveled some gravel into your pan and shook it in the COLD water.

The next stop was more rewarding.  We rode a tram to the top of a mountain overlooking Turnagain Arm.  It was beautiful view.  There were also many hiking trails on the mountain.  Jeff and Marcella hiked to the tip top of the mountain.  I didn't have on my hiking boots.  Good excuse huh.
